(HANCOCK COUNTY) - Dispatchers in Greenfield say a Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a three-car crash on US 40 Friday afternoon.
The accident happened on US 40 and CR 400 E around 3:30 p.m. Authorities say the deputy and two other civilians were injured but it was not immediately clear what the severity of those injuries were.
Three cars were involved in the crash.
Initially, a medical helicopter was called to the scene but was disregarded.
Dispatchers in Hancock County say one of the two ambulances that was transporting the injured broke down on Interstate 70. All patients were being taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital.
Hancock County Sheriff's Captain Robert Campbell says the deputy was on patrol when he stopped to help a driver on the grass median. Another driver veered off the road and struck the deputy's car.
Campbell says the driver of that car and the passenger apparently fell asleep.
All lanes of US 40 were closed for over an hour but reopened around 5:45 p.m.
Authorities say all injured in the crash are expected to be OK.
