Semi Driver's Blood Alcohol Content More Than 3 Times Legal Limit

Last updated on Thursday, May 23, 2013

(GRANT COUNTY) - Police arrested a semi driver with a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit after a tip from a motorist in Grant County.

State troopers monitoring a work zone on I-69 near the 271 mile marker were flagged down by the motorist, who reported the semi driving erratically on southbound I-69 near the construction zone. Troopers caught up to the semi about a mile later, observing the driver allegedly swerving erratically across lanes and onto the shoulder.

The semi driver, identified as Jason Hunsberger, 42, of Elwood, drove for about three miles after police turned their emergency sirens on before stopping. Hunsberger only pulled over after a trooper drove alongside the trailer to get his attention. Troopers say the driver almost struck the police vehicle as he swerved between lanes.

After reportedly observing signs that Hunsberger may have been impaired, further investigation revealed Hunsberger had a blood-alcohol content of .26.

Hunsberger is being held at the Grant County Jail on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. He was also issued traffic citations for unsafe lane movement, driving left of the center line, consuming intoxicating beverages four hours prior to driving a commercial motor vehicle, and operating a commercial motor vehicle without wearing glasses or contacts as required.

The semi was reportedly carrying canned food products from Napoleon, Ohio to Monroe, Georgia for Pam Transport, Inc., which is based in Tontitown, Arkansas.

State police encourage motorists to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911. Give the dispatcher a location, suspect vehicle description, and direction of travel. Drivers are reminded to never follow an impaired driver.
