Police: Man Flees Attempting To Get Out Of Seatbelt Ticket

Last updated on Thursday, May 23, 2013

(TERRE HAUTE) - A Vigo County man is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in hopes of getting out of a seatbelt ticket.

WTHI reports that West Terre Haute police tried pulling over Kenneth Baker, 31, on National Avenue after they reported seeing him driving without a seatbelt. Police said Baker sped off, driving away on U.S. 150 and reaching speeds of 90 miles an hour.

Baker turned west onto a set of railroad tracks, driving on the tracks for about four miles before taking an access road off the tracks. Baker drove on a farm access road before getting stuck in a field. By the end of the chase, police said, Baker was only driving on one inflated tire.

Baker faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness, criminal trespass on railroad property and reckless driving. He was also cited for traffic violations including not wearing a seatbelt.
