(GREENFIELD) - A Greenfield man was arrested Tuesday after he brought a gun to his child's elementary school, police said.

Officers were called to Harris Elementary School at 200 W. Park Ave. after a security officer saw a man wearing an empty shoulder holster.

When questioned, Martin L. Hensley told the security officer that he had left the handgun in his vehicle, which was parked outside the school's entrance.

Police said the semi-automatic handgun was left in plain view in Hensley's car.

"No threats were made by Hensley, and it is believed he was only at the school to have lunch with his children," police said in a statement.

State law allows a person to have a gun in their vehicle on school property only if they are dropping off or picking up their children.

Hensley was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of a firearm on school property.
