(PUTNAMVILLE) - A central Indiana state prison is throwing open the gates to its 100-acre farm for retired racehorses for an open house showing off the thoroughbreds and their inmate handlers.
The Associated Press reports that visitors can tour the Putnamville Correctional Facility's Second Chances Farm during the May 24 open house to see the farm's 30 ex-racehorses and speak to inmates who help run the farm.
Inmates learn technical and life skills caring for the farm's former racehorses as part of a vocational training program that can help them land jobs once they're released from prison.
The Indiana Department of Correction says the program's graduates are 50 percent less likely to re-offend and end up back in prison. The farm is a partnership between the DOC and the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.
