(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Pence will sign a bill Thursday expanding Indiana’s school voucher program.
Jessica Hayes of WISH TV8 reports that the program is already the largest in the country, but the new legislation will expand it further.
This will bring several major changes to the 2013-14 school year:
Students no longer have to attend a failing school to qualify.
Students can receive vouchers without first attending a public school for a year.
The program will be open to all students who live in a public school district that received a state performance grade of F.
The application window for the 2013/2014 school year opened February 27, 2013 and closes August 26, 2013.
To be eligible, a household must meet certain income requirements.
For example, to receive a 90 percent scholarship, the household income limit for a family of four is $43,568. To receive a 50 percent scholarship, the household income limit for a family of four is $65,352.
This is third year for Indiana's voucher program.
During the first year 7,500 vouchers were available; last year that number doubled to 15,000 vouchers; this school year, the cap disappears.
