Coroner: Deceased Woman Had Been Dead 6 Months

Last updated on Friday, May 10, 2013

(VIGO COUNTY) - A neighbor made a frightening discovery after the body of a woman no one’s heard from in months was found.

WTHI reports that the story behind this woman's life is both puzzling and tragic.

Neighbors found the body of 65-year-old Mary Remley inside her northern Vigo County home Wednesday night.

Neighbors and friends had not heard from Mary in some time.

"Through the coroner's office and through last contact by neighbors or relatives, it appears as though she may have been deceased up to six months," said Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.

According to the police report, Remley was wearing winter clothing and boots.

She was also lying in a makeshift bed underneath her front window.

This story continued taking tragic turns as police tried to locate Remley's next of kin.

"She was a widow, and her local family had either moved away or passed on. The closest living relative that we could find was in California," Cottom said.

That relative is her biological son, who told detectives he hasn't spoken to his mother in nearly 10 years.

In fact, police had to read the obituary of Remley's deceased husband to learn she even had a son.

Police also learned Remley lived at her home on North Lafayette and also at the Conner Center.

This is a shelter for homeless women.

That's where Remley's story takes an unusual turn.

"In our investigation, we have determined she had considerable assets. So it is an unusual case that someone with those types of resources is living in a homeless shelter," said Cottom.

Right now, the coroner's office will try to pin down a more exact time of Remley's death.

Police discovered a calendar in her home where Mary had been marking off the days with the last day being November 13.
