Tax Preparers Warn Of IRS Crackdown

Last updated on Monday, April 1, 2013

(UNDATED) - As the April 15th tax filing deadline approaches, Indiana tax preparers are sending out warning.

The IRS is cracking down on people who claim to be either self-employed or parents who are claiming dependents for the earned income tax credit.

Liberty Tax Service Manager Greg Carney says his office has sent many so-called self-employed people back home in search of 1099 forms and expense forms as proof that they actually work and have had work-related expenses.

He says it's also the case for parents this year. Carney says parents seeking the earned income tax credit needed to provide either documentation from their kids' schools or doctors offices as proof that they reside with them for at least half of the year.

Carney says the IRS has tightened these requirements for tax preparers in an effort to prevent people from inflating figures and taking advantage of the system.

Carney says in both scenarios, simple figures without solid proof simply won't do. In short, Carney says when you visit your tax preparer, have your hard-copy documentation in hand and ready to turn in.
