(WATERTOWN, Mass.) - Massachusetts Police say one of two suspects in the fatal shooting of an MIT campus officer is dead, and the other has been tied to the Boston marathon bombing by surveillance pictures.
They believe the second suspect, identified as Marathon bombing Suspect #2, is a "terrorist" who "came here to kill people."
A district attorney says the other suspect died at hospital after a shootout with police.
The shooting of the campus officer at MIT Thursday night was followed by reports of violence in nearby Watertown, about 10 miles west of Boston. A state police spokesman said early Friday there is a "strong possibility" the incidents are related.
Police say the man identified as Suspect #2 also matches surveillance video of one of the two men suspected of robbing a 7-11 in Cambridge Thursday night. That led police to chase the two suspects to Watertown.
Residents of Watertown have been advised to keep their doors locked and not let anyone in.
The Middlesex district attorney says the two men are suspected of killing an MIT police officer at the college late Thursday, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed.
Authorities say a campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology died from injuries in a shooting on the campus in Cambridge, outside Boston.
Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office says the officer was responding to a report of a disturbance when he was shot multiple times. He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.
State Police spokesman Dave Procopio says the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building.
There are no other victims.
About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school.
The campus website said police were sweeping the campus and urged people to stay indoors until issuing an all-clear at 1:56 a.m.
A Massachusetts Transit officer was also shot, and is in critical condition.
Police believe the suspects threw explosives from the car as police followed it into Watertown. The suspects and police exchanged gunfire and one of the suspects was critically injured and later died.
