(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Spring warmth that brought the warmest temperatures in nearly seven months is now bringing the possibility of severe weather.

A potent storm system moving out of the northern plains will move across Indiana late Wednesday night, bringing several rounds of showers and storms. Some of the storms could be severe, including the possibility of damaging winds, hail and even tornadoes.

Temperatures on Wednesday afternoon will return to the mid to upper 70s, making for a volatile atmosphere as the system approaches Wednesday night. Though a few showers or storms could be possible early Wednesday afternoon, expect partly cloudy skies during most of the day.

Early Wednesday evening the threat for strong storms goes up. Initially, a warm front to the north may retreat back into Indiana from the Great Lakes region. Storms could fire along this boundary and move very little, increasing the threat for heavy rain in northern Indiana.

A few thunderstorms may be able to fire across southern Illinois and Indiana in the warm, moist air in place across much of the Midwest.

These discreet cells, if they develop, have the possibility to produce hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes. While the largest threat of severe weather with this system is not from these discreet cells, they could be possible later Wednesday evening.

The largest threat of severe weather will come as the cold front passes late Wednesday overnight and into Thursday morning. The system has slowed a bit, delaying the arrival of a line of storms into early Thursday morning. It is within this line of storms that very strong, damaging winds could be possible. That line of thunderstorms in expected to clear central Indiana by mid-morning and exit Indiana by midday.

In the wake of this strong system, a return to cooler temperatures is in the forecast. Highs in the 40s are expected for Friday. Some scattered showers may linger into Friday afternoon, but clearing is expected by the weekend.
