Police Say Teen Fatally Shot In Gang Rite

Last updated on Wednesday, April 3, 2013

(CROWN POINT) - Lake County authorities say a teenager fired shots into a Merrillville home as part of a gang initiation, striking a 14-year-old boy who died two days later.

Police say Depree Mims died Friday after being shot through a window of his home. The Times of Munster quotes a probable cause affidavit as saying a relative told police someone had threatened Mims recently.

Police charged 18-year-old Kevin Brown, 22-year-old Anthony Addison, 21-year-old Joshua Addison and a 16-year-old youth, all of Merrillville, with murder and criminal gang activity. It wasn't immediately clear if they had attorneys.

The affidavit states Brown confessed to the shooting and the youth said Brown wanted to join a gang the other two men belong to. The Addisons denied involvement, saying they were with their father.
