(CROWN POINT) - Northwest Indiana police say the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old in his home appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
Detectives in Merrillville say in a probable cause affidavit that one of the three men arrested in connection with the shooting of 14-year-old DePree Mims was angry after being shot by a person known as "J" and directed another man to fire into the home from outside as part of a gang initiation.
Mims died at a Chicago hospital Friday two days after being shot.
According to the Post-Tribune, Detective Cmdr. Robert Wiley is quoted as saying Wednesday that Mims' neighborhood isn't known for gang activity but police have stepped up patrols there.
Three men and a 16-year-old youth in custody all are charged with murder and criminal gang activity.
