Neighbors Save Three People From House Fire

Last updated on Monday, April 8, 2013

(FORT WAYNE) - Three people narrowly escaped a fire that destroyed a home in the 9000 block of Blazing Woods Trail Sunday afternoon.

WANE TV reports that the home is in the Hunters Glen subdivision, off of Saint Joe Road. Smoke could be seen from I-469.

Chad Jacobs, the fire chief at Northeast Allen County Fire & EMS, said that a neighbor called 911 around 1:30 p.m. after seeing the home's garage engulfed in flames.

That same neighbor ran into the home to rescue the people inside. He said that he went in a first time and got two people out, then went inside the home a second time to rescue the third person.

Jacobs said it was a close call, but no one was injured in the fire.

The home was declared a total loss, along with two cars in the driveway.

Jacobs said the homes on either side of the house also sustained some exterior damage. A photo shows one of the home's siding was melted from the extreme heat of the fire.

Firefighters deemed the fire under control at around 2:10 p.m., about 40 minutes after the call initially came in.

Jacobs said they believe the fire started in the garage but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
