(JEFFERSONVILLE) - A southern Indiana judge has sentenced a man to the maximum of 65 years in prison for fatally stabbing his estranged wife more than 50 times with a large pocket knife.
47-year-old Edward "Dale" Bagshaw of Jeffersonville apologized in court Monday for the November 2011 slaying of Kelly Bagshaw, who was 30 at the time.
Clark Circuit Judge Vicki Carmichael suspended five years of Bagshaw's sentence.
Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Mull says the maximum was deserved because of the long time it took for Kelly Bagshaw to die and because her two young children were nearby at the time.
Defense attorney Perry McCall had asked that Carmichael sentence Bagshaw to the minimum sentence of 45 years.
A jury deliberated about 90 minutes before convicting Bagshaw of murder Jan. 18.
