(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two explosions shattered the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon, and a number of Hoosiers were in town for the event.
About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.
About 283 people from Indiana are in Boston for the marathon, and a number of those runners are from Central Indiana. According to a list of registered runners, 45 are from Indianapolis, 17 from Fishers, six from Zionsville, seven from Columbus, seven from Greenwood, nine from Bloomington, six from Noblesville, three from Muncie, four from Lafayette, and six from Kokomo.
Hoosiers having trouble getting in touch with their family in Boson can call 617-635-4500.
Nathan Clinkenbeard of Indianapolis ran his first Boston Marathon Monday. He told 24-Hour News 8's Troy Kehoe that he finished the race about an hour before the explosions, but heard them go off from a restaurant nearby.
"We're right next to one of the wharfs and we've already seen the coast guard come by once already. So, it looks like they're keeping a good eye on everything around here. You kind of wonder if you're safe where you are. I have to say that I feel safe enough though," Clinkenbeard said.
Clinkenbeard said his family is with him in Boston. He says his phone hasn't stopped ringing with friends calling to make sure he is OK.
Initially, he said people in the area were filled with panic. But he said a heavy police presence quickly emerged.
In addition to the many Hoosier runners in Boston Monday, the Indiana Pacers are also in Boston preparing for a game against the Celtics. The Pacers said everyone in their travel party has been accounted for. Tuesday's night game has been cancelled, with no plans to reschedule.
