(FORT WAYNE) - Two men briefly held a couple against their will in a Fort Wayne home Monday night as part of a botched plan to rob a financial institution, city police said.
Archie Ingersoll of The Journal Gazette reports that the attempt appeared similar to a robbery last week and another in August, in which women were used to help rob the credit unions where they worked.
In Monday's case, the couple came home and found the two men inside, armed with handguns, said officer Jason Anthony, a police spokesman.
The men had broken into the home with the intention of finding someone to help them rob a financial institution, Anthony said. However, police declined to say whether the man or woman work at such an institution.
The men restrained the couple, but shortly afterward, the men became frightened and fled, Anthony said.
"For whatever reason, I think they thought police were on their way," he said.
Police were sent to the home just before 9 p.m. Using a police dog, officers determined that the two men had driven off in a nearby vehicle, Anthony said. Concerned for the victims' safety, police did not release the address of the home.
On Thursday, two men ambushed a credit union employee in her home and held her hostage for more than four hours before driving her across the city to rob the Pinnacle Credit Union at 3425 Hobson Road where she worked.
In late August, two men tied up a 68-year-old credit union manager and took her from her home to the Freedom Financial Federal Credit Union at 1802 Inwood Drive.
In both cases, robbers stole undisclosed amounts of cash, police said.
