(UNDATED) - At least one Indiana mosquito control expert is gearing up for a busy summer season.
Scott Langdon is owner of the Indianapolis office of The Mosquito Authority. Langdon says the current flooding situation across Central Indiana is providing the perfect breeding ground for the annoying pests.
Langdon's firm installs barrier sprays and pesticides in lawns and on properties to keep them mosquito-free.
Langdon says regardless of weather - including last summer's drought - mosquitoes lay eggs all the time. Langdon says mosquitoes were busy laying eggs in the bottom of creeks and all over during last summer's drought. He says mosquito eggs can last for years unhatched.
Now that the perfect conditions are here, Langdon says mosquitoes are even busier laying eggs along water banks across the state. He says that's on top of the eggs they've already dropped.
Langdon says he expects eggs laid last year to hatch very soon. He says three straight days of 65-degree temperatures will cause the eggs to hatch. That's if there isn't another overnight freeze.
He's says they're prepared to start spraying season May 10th. He anticipates eight major sprays that will run through October.
Langdon says the best thing people can do is keep their property free of standing water.
