Ball State Student Held At Gunpoint

Last updated on Friday, April 26, 2013

(MUNCIE) - College is supposed to be a time of learning, but a few Ball State students got a lesson they weren’t expecting at their off-campus home.

Adrienne Broaddus of WISH TV8 reports that the incident happened in the 1000 block of West Rex Street in Muncie. That's about four blocks from campus.

The student who took the brunt of the harm is recovering after doctors sealed his injury with six staples. His friend says one of the suspects hit him in the head with a gun and a game controller.

The students told police someone knocked at the door, and pushed their way in the house after the victim partially opened the door.

Once inside, one of the students was forced to the ground at gunpoint. The suspects demanded money. All of the commotion startled Jack Smith.

"I came out of my room because I thought somebody was just being way too loud. I opened the door and there was a gun pointed straight in my face. So I just immediately slammed the door," Smith said.

Students on campus were not alerted to the attempted robbery. Some, posting on social media sites said they should have been.

A university spokesperson, Alan Hargrave, said that will not always happen.

"We take public safety very seriously," Hargrave said. "We are concerned but every time something happens we will not be sending out a public safety message because not every incident has an impact on others."

Smith says he and his friends are moving. Smith says they will be more careful the next time there's a knock at the door.

"It was pretty terrifying," the sophomore from Fort Wayne said. "I don't usually like to wake up to starring down a barrel of a gun."
