23 Cats Surrended To Hamilton County Humane Society

Last updated on Wednesday, April 24, 2013

(NOBLESVILLE) - The Humane Society for Hamilton County is asking for help after a woman dropped off 23 cats to the shelter Tuesday.

"She (called and said she) was moving out of her apartment today and had 23 cats that she was going to bring us," said Rebecca Stevens, the facility's executive director.

Jenna Kooi of RTV6 reports that it turns out, the woman's landlord thought she only had two cats, and more than 20 was a problem.

The Humane Society now has cage after cage of the woman's cats, from newborns on up, who need homes.

"We're in a situation where every cage is full, and when you get 20 or more or 10 at a time, when you operate essentially as a no-kill facility when it comes to adoptable animals, it's very tough for us to keep up," Stevens said.

Staff members are starting to spay and neuter the pets -- something Stevens said their former owner should've done earlier to avoid this situation.

Eight of the cats were placed in foster homes Tuesday. To adopt one of the cats contact the shelter.
