(INDIANAPOLIS) - Today is National Medal of Honor Day. It was 150 years ago that the nation's highest military award was first bestowed.

Since 1999, Indianapolis has been home to the national Medal of Honor Memorial. Comprised of 27 curved blue-green sails, representing 15 major conflicts in American history, the memorial sits across the downtown canal from the Eiteljorg Museum.

Visitors are encouraged to rub their hands across the glass surface to feel the embedded names.

The IPALCO Foundation oversees operation of the Memorial. The Foundation is making plans to added the names of the four most recent recipients later this year.

Since the death of Melvin Biddle of Anderson in late 2010, there have been no Medal of Honor recipients living in Indiana. Throughout history, the list includes 75 tied to the Hoosier State.

Contributions to the Memorial can be made to the IPALCO Foundation at One Monument Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.
