(UNDATED) - Governor Mike Pence says he believes Indiana can pass a balanced budget and provide income tax relief for Hoosiers in addition to boosting road and infrastructure improvements for cities and towns.
The Governor spoke at the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns Legislative Day Luncheon at the Statehouse Tuesday. That's where he pitched his income tax cut once again.
Pence is recommending lowering the income tax rate. The move would cost about $300 million during the 2014 budget year alone. The Governor says the state would maintain its $2 billion budget reserve.
However, many localities have big concerns. Linton Mayor John Wilkes says as a citizen, he likes to see tax cuts, but as mayor, Linton simply doesn't have enough money to pay for road upgrades, police and fire staffing.
Whiting Mayor Joe Stahura says it's a "no brainer" that cities simply need the Governor's tax cut money for infrastructure. He says localities have been under lots of pressure and need every dollar they can get to remain afloat.
