Fire Prompts Early School Dismissal, Student Questioned

Last updated on Wednesday, March 13, 2013

(MOORESVILLE) - A Mooresville student accused of setting a small fire that forced two schools to dismiss early Tuesday has been identified, district officials said.

Mooresville High School and Paul Hadley Middle School, which are connected, were evacuated just before 11:15 a.m. after smoke filled the building. Classes were dismissed early at 12:30 p.m.

Mooresville High School will be closed Wednesday due to smoke damage, but the middle school will be open.

Fire investigators said the small fire was set in a bathroom on the school's second floor. No injuries were reported.

District officials said a student had been questioned in connection with the fire. The student was released to the custody of his or her parents.

Another evacuation was reported at about 9:15 a.m. in Fishers, when the smoke alarm sounded at Hamilton Southeastern's Riverside Elementary School.

Officials said about 2,000 students and staff were inside the building when the smoke alarm went off.

No fire was reported, but officials say the smoke likely came from a broken furnace.
