Fatal Crash Closes I-65 Southbound

Last updated on Tuesday, March 5, 2013

(FRANKLIN) - A fatal crash on I-65 closed traffic in both directions for a bit Monday night. As of 11:30 p.m., the northbound lanes have been reopened to traffic.

Indiana State Police say the incident occurred after 10:30 p.m. near the 85 mile marker. This area is just south of the Franklin exit.

Officials say a motorist was traveling on the wrong side of the interstate and crashed head-on into a semi truck. The vehicle then slid into the median and burst into flames. The driver of the car has been pronounced dead.

The driver of the semi has been taken to St. Francis Hospital. The condition of the semi driver is not yet known.

Northbound traffic has been opened. Southbound traffic is expected to be closed for at least another hour. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling near the 85 mile marker on I-65.
