Car Fire Damages Vehicles At Indianapolis Airport

Last updated on Saturday, March 30, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Airport firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle fire around 5 a.m. Friday morning.

According to Airport Fire Department Division Chief Kevin Elmore, the fire was reported on the second floor of the parking garage and confined to two vehicles.

The primary vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala was destroyed. An adjacent vehicle, a 2012 Audi also suffered damage. Both vehicles were towed away from the garage.

During the fire, officials blocked access to the second and third floor of the garage due to heavy smoke and fire equipment battling the blaze. Once the fire was extinguished, the second and third floors opened, and only the immediate area around the fire scene remained closed.

Elmore said the Airport Fire Department purchased a vehicle specifically designed to deal with car fires inside the parking garage. It made the initial attack while crews worked to put water into the garage's standpipe.

The Ground Transportation Center which is on the first floor of the garage remained open during the fire.

The garage is connected to the main terminal by a passenger walkway. An announcement was made to passengers inside the terminal around 5:40 a.m. to not enter the second level of the garage due to heavy smoke.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
