Last updated on Tuesday, March 12, 2013

(COLUMBUS) - A 13-year-old boy was hit by a car Monday morning in Columbus on the first day of school since the time change, The Republic reports.

The boy, Jalen Smith, was crossing Marr Road at Hollowell Drive just after 7 a.m. on his way to Columbus East High School to catch a bus to Central Middle School. Police officials told the newspaper the boy walked in front of a vehicle that was northbound on Marr Road at the time. The driver wasn't able to avoid hitting Smith.

Smith was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital before being transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. He is in critical but stable condition as of Monday evening.

Investigators believe the dark conditions along with the rainy weather played a role in the accident, a release said.
