Wintery Mix To Hit Central Indiana Late Today

Last updated on Thursday, February 21, 2013

(UNDATED) - A wintry mix is poised to make Thursday evening and Friday morning messy for parts of Indiana.

Clouds will increase Thursday as a storm system makes its way toward Indiana. By late evening Thursday a wintry mix is expected to begin across much of central and parts of southern Indiana.

Dry air will be in place as the storm system arrives, so it will take time for the atmosphere to moisten up enough for precipitation to fall, StormTeam 6 meteorologist Todd Klaassen said.

The precipitation is expected to start as snow or sleet in the Indianapolis area, with a transition to freezing rain possible as warmer air works in Friday morning.

"It starts as snow or sleet for just about everybody except for those of you well down to the south (Bloomington and Greensburg areas)," Klaassen said. "But as we go into Friday morning, the warmer air works in and it goes over to freezing rain for just about everybody, with just plain old rain down to the south."

About an inch of snow and sleet accumulation is possible along the Interstate 70 corridor, with 2-inch amounts possible north of that area. Accumulation will be less to the south, where more rain will fall.

On Friday morning, about a tenth of an inch of ice is expected, which could make travel treacherous but should not cause problems with trees or power lines.

The storm system is still developing, so there could be some tweaks to the forecast before the precipitation begins.
