State Assembly Will Not Vote On Gay Marriage Ban

Last updated on Friday, February 8, 2013

(STATEHOUSE) - Indiana Equality Action gets what that group and its allies want—at least this year.

Senate President David Long and House Speaker Brian Bosma say the General Assembly will not act until 2014 on the proposed constitutional ban on same sex marriage. That would still give the legislators time to get it on the statewide election ballot by November of next year.

But for now, Equality Action Executive Director Rick Sutton thanks legislators for putting aside a proposal that he says could have "uncertain long-term consequences." In a prepared statement, Sutton said--quote--"a delay is by no means a win." But he said Indiana is stronger when we all move forward together.
