Purdue Officials Investigate Typhoid Fever Case

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue officials continue to monitor typhoid fever at the school.

A food handler at the school is the only confirmed case, but spokesperson Jeanne Norberg says others have gone to hospitals to inquire about symptoms.

Norberg says the school has offered to test one person who "probably does not have typhoid fever" but because she ate at Mariott Hall the test will be done. The State Department of Health says lab results take 3 to 5 days to be returned.

Norberg says they have checked with area emergency rooms but they have been below average in the number of people reporting any gastric distress. Norberg says school officials are concerned, but not alarmed.

Anyone who ate at Purdue's Boiler Bistro, John Purdue Room or the coffee house Lavazza from January 23-25 might have been exposed. Symptoms include headache, weakness and fatigue, dry cough, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation and rash.
