Northbound I-65 And Eastbound I-70 Open

Last updated on Monday, February 25, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Northbound Interstate 65 and eastbound Interstate 70 have reopened beneath a steel bridge beam that was damaged Friday.

"The Indiana Department of Transportation thanks the contractors and our in-house bridge, maintenance and construction staff who worked day and night this weekend to safely reopen the interstate," said Greenfield District Deputy Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson. "We also thank motorists for their patience."

United Consulting designed splice plates using material available from Indiana Steel & Engineering Corp., which cut and drilled the steel plates to the appropriate dimensions, a media release said.

INDOT said Harmon Steel installed temporary support structures and installed the steel splice plates using bolts provided by Midwest Structural Products.

Rieth-Riley Construction helped to organize repairs, INDOT said.

An INDOT bridge inspector measured the Virginia Avenue overpass and directed the vertical clearance be posted at 13 feet 11 inches.

All vehicles traveling state highways over 13 feet 6 inches are required to obtain a permit through the Indiana Department of Revenue.
