Mega-Church Faces Forclosure

Last updated on Saturday, February 23, 2013

(MUNSTER) - A northern Indiana megachurch mired in financial woes tied to church leaders’ spending on travel and compensation is facing a foreclosure request by an Illinois bank.

Court records show that First National Bank of Illinois filed a mortgage foreclosure case Tuesday against the Family Christian Center, Senior Pastor Steve Munsey and the Internal Revenue Service.

The Times of Munster reports court documents show that as of Jan. 4 the Munster church owes the bank more than $604,000.

The Times reported Sunday that church leadership had been spending millions of dollars annually on leadership compensation, travel and meals. The newspaper found that those expenses were made as the church was falling behind on its mortgage payments and racking up a list of past-due bills.
