(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two people have been pulled from the waters of the White River downtown and taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermic conditions.

TheIndyChannel.com reports that officials said a woman and a man were pulled from the water near the bridge between the Indianapolis Zoo and White River State Park.

Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Larry Tracy said it appears the woman went into the water first and the man jumped in to rescue her.

Tracy said it is not clear yet how the woman wound up in the water.

The man and woman appear to not know one another, Tracy said. He thinks the man was a pedestrian who saw the woman in the water and tried to rescue her.

The two were in 4 to 5 feet of water for 20 to 30 minutes before being rescued. IFD said the man held onto the woman while waiting for the boat.
