Ind. Murder Convict Mistakenly Released In Chicago

Last updated on Friday, February 1, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana and Illinois authorities are hunting for a convicted murderer mistakenly released from custody in Chicago.

The Indiana Department of Correction said Thursday that 44-year-old Steven L. Robbins was mistakenly released by Illinois authorities this week without being returned. Robbins had been transferred from the Indiana State Prison on Tuesday to face a drug possession charge in Cook County, Ill., but the charge was dropped and he was released.

Prison officials say Robbins was serving a 60-year sentence out of Indianapolis for murder and a weapons charge with a projected release date in 2029.

A warrant for the Gary native's arrest was issued in both Indiana and Illinois.

The Department of Correction did not say why Robbins was mistakenly released.
