Hoosier Astronaut Calls Senate Floor From Space

Last updated on Friday, February 8, 2013

(STATEHOUSE) - The Indiana Senate began its Thursday afternoon session with a treat from space.

Commander Kevin Ford answered questions for 20 minutes on the Senate Floor via satellite link from the International Space Station.

Ford is the brother of the late Senator David Ford of Hartford City who died of cancer in March 2008. Kevin Ford grew up in Blackford County and graduated from the University of Notre Dame before joining the Air Force to become a pilot and eventually the NASA space program.

Ford answered a variety of questions including life in space, working with astronauts from other countries, his education and path to the space program, and the future of manned space travel.

Senate Pro Tem David Long reconvened the senate session to vote on a resolution to honor Ford, which passed unanimously.
