(GREENWOOD) - It was tried nearly a decade before but failed. Walmart tried again, to build a store in Greenwood, but some neighbors are not so enthusiastic.
Erin Murphy of WISH TV8 reports, the proposed Walmart is for a 14.8 acre piece of land right off SR 135 and Smith Valley Road. The plot of land that sits next to Home Depot and across the street from Super Target is already zoned for a commercial property.
Monday night, the Walmart was approved at a planning commission meeting without public discussion.
Residents showed up at the meeting, only to be told there would be no discussion on the issue.
Those living in the Sherpherd's Grove subdivision, that is directly behind the proposed site, say they want some issues addressed before anything is built on the empty lot.
"Traffic is a big issue over here on smith valley road, anyone heading east on smith valley and wants to turn left and go north on 135 rush hour traffic and half the time during the day you wait through two and three lights to turn," says Donna Cale the President of the Homeowner's Association.
The Greenwood Deputy Mayor says the city knows there is already a traffic issue.
Greenwood Deputy Mayor Terry McLaughlin says he understands there might be concerns, but overall the new store will offer the city more economic opportunities.
Donna Cale says she wants the city to also put up a buffer between the store and the subdivision and she's worried about drainage issues into their neighborhood retention pond.
Walmart has two months to come up with a site plan. Then, the plan will go before a tech committee and the council.
