(UNDATED) - Many users browsing the Web on Thursday afternoon were redirected to a Facebook page with an “error” message giving the impression that the Internet had been knocked out.
Salvador Rodriguez and Jessica Guynn of the LA Times reports that the glitch actually only hit those who were using a Web browser for both logging into Facebook and surfing the Internet. When they visited websites that use the social network's Facebook Connect feature, the site suddenly stopped working and loaded up a Facebook page with a message that read "An error occurred. Please try again later."
The issue affected numerous websites, including Hulu and Gawker among others. Users who weren't logged into their Facebook account on the same browser they were using to visit those websites did not experience the issue.
The Facebook problem didn't appear to last long, but because so many websites now have some sort of connection with Facebook, typically with the "Like" and "Recommend" buttons, countless people noticed the failure.
Here's what Facebook had to say:
"For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual."
