(BEECH GROVE) - Two Beech Grove students are under investigation for using school email to send a pornographic image to their entire high school, and making it look like one of their classmates was to blame.
Kent Erdahl of FOX59 reports that the Beech Grove principal said the two students, who admitted to sending the image, exposed a loophole in the email system during software upgrades in late December, which allowed them to send mass emails to all students and staff.
Principal Steve Cox said the school identified the pornographic image soon after it was sent out.
"It was probably live for about an hour and then a staff member called me and I called and had it shut off, the email system," Cox said.
Cox said the quick response likely kept many students from viewing the image, but he has no way of knowing for sure.
"I do not know if 200 saw it, or 50 or 800," Cox said.
The school sent an email to all high school parents informing them of the incident. Administrators also initiated an investigation with Beech Grove and IMPD. Cox said detectives soon learned that two Beech Grove students were behind the email and that they made it look like another student was the one who sent it.
"The person that did it had hacked into another student's email, basically," Cox said. "They had been friends before and the one student knew the other student's email password, and so they just kind of picked on him."
Whether or not it should be considered cyber bullying is now one of several questions the school is considering.
"We're not going to tolerate or allow students to do what was done," Cox said. "They're in due process for a disciplinary action."
The Marion County Prosecutor is now considering whether or not to charge the students for sending pornographic material to minors.
