(CAMBY) - A bar fight that began because of a racial epithet resulted in the arrest of a man who came to the defense of a woman who was being called the N-word, police said.
According to a police report, Jay Clements, 28, was at Kat's Pub in the 7000 block of Kentucky Avenue about 1 a.m. Friday when he got into an argument and a scuffle with a 23-year-old man.
A witness told officers that the 23-year-old man came up to a black woman and called her the N-word.
The younger man "continued to make racial comments, and Mr. Clements (and the other man) went face-to-face by the front of the bar and began a physical confrontation," according to a witness account in the police report.
Witnesses said Clements struck the other man in the side of the head with a glass cup, striking an artery and causing extensive bleeding.
Officers said they found blood from the younger man covering Clements' face, hands and clothing. Investigators said Clements also had cuts to his hands and face.
Clements was arrested on a charge of battery causing injury. The man who was struck was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Mooresville for treatment.
Police did not find the woman involved in the incident.
