Unusual Tracks In Snow Lead To Arrests

Last updated on Thursday, January 3, 2013

(CLERMONT) - Police officers tracked fresh footprints in the snow to solve a burglary case northwest of Indianapolis near the town of Clermont in Hendricks County.

An 85-year-old resident of the Eagle Creek Apartments off Interstate 74 near North Raceway Road reported finding her bedroom window shattered by burglars. They made off with a 42-inch television, about $1,000 in costume jewelry, two bottles of wine and a plastic baggie with about $50 worth of loose change.

As Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers began investigating, they noticed foot prints in the snow outside the broken window. Some of the prints included an unusual circular pattern on the heel, which allowed officers to follow the prints to a nearby patio door of another apartment.

Police obtained a search warrant for that apartment, noting that no other footprints were noticed in the snow after that Dec. 22 break-in.

The burglars' patio door was only 300 feet from the 85-year-old victim's broken window, officers wrote in their search warrant probable cause affidavit on file Wednesday afternoon.

When officers raided the nearby apartment, court records show they confiscated many of the jewelry items described by the victim, along with an entire plastic drawer full of costume jewelry that was swiped from the victim. The TV and the wine were not located, according to those records.

Officers also write that they recovered a baggie full of change, the victim's identification card, four gold necklaces and a red cloth bag that was mentioned by the victim.

Police also recovered a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun with a scope, which may have been stolen in a separate break-in.

IMPD headquarters said it was an ongoing investigation, so no information was released about the burglars or criminal charges.

The 85-year-old victim could not be located for her reaction to the case.
