Oaktown Woman Dies In Crash

(SULLIVAN CO.) - One southern Indiana woman was killed in a single vehicle crash that happened on the Sullivan-Knox county line around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Sullivan County emergency response agencies, including the Indiana State Police, responded to a call to dispatch about a singe vehicle crash on Old US 41 just north of the Knox-Sullivan county line.

Upon arrival, crews worked to rescue the driver, Billy Soltermann, 30, of Oaktown, Ind. and his wife Shanda Soltermann, 28, also of Oaktown from the wreck. After freeing both, Billy was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital with facial, leg and internal injuries; however, Shanda was unresponsive at the scene, and later pronounced dead by the Sullivan County Coroner's Office.

Within the initial investigation, police discovered a red, 2006, Dodge Charger was traveling northbound on Old US 41 at a high rate of speed on C.R. 1200 S. When, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway on the east side and traveled approximately 200 feet, before striking a tree head-on.

According to a release from the Indiana State Police, "Seatbelts are believed to have not been in use, and alcohol may be a factor."

The investigation is ongoing and the report will be submitted to the Sullivan County Prosecutor's Office for review of any potential charges.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Tyler VanNess. Assisting were ISP Trooper Mike Taylor, Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, Sullivan County Coroner's Office, Sullivan County EMS, and Haddon Township Fire/Rescue.
