Man Arrested After Chase And Shots Fired

Last updated on Sunday, January 27, 2013

(DARLINGTON) - A Crawfordsville man was arrested early Saturday morning after a chase in Montgomery County that resulted in a shot being fired at him, Indiana State Police said.

The incident happened about 12:20 a.m. on State Road 47 near County Road 500 East about a mile west of Darlington, according to a news release from Sgt. Kim Riley.

A trooper and a Montgomery County sheriff's deputy were pursuing the driver of a pickup truck, later identified as Craig M. Cook, 61, of Crawfordsville, for about a mile before he stopped, investigators said.

"The officers gave verbal commands to exit the vehicle, and Cook refused to follow lawful commands. Cook finally exited the vehicle, still refusing to comply with the officers' lawful commands," Riley said. "Cook reached inside his clothing, appearing to reach for a handgun on his belt, when the deputy deployed his Taser as the trooper fired his weapon."

Police said the Taser struck Cook, who fell to the ground but that the shot from the officer did not hit him.

Cook was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Cook was arrested on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement with a deadly weapon and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

He was being held Saturday in the Montgomery County Jail.
