(VIGO COUNTY) - Vigo County Jail staff were unable to resuscitate an inmate they found unresponsive after being alerted by other inmates being held in the same cell.
The Vigo County Sheriff's Department said inmate William Powell, 48, on Monday, was in a physical altercation before being arrested and brought to the jail. He was denied at booking due to the extent of his injuries, and wouldn't be allowed until he was treated, and cleared, at a local hospital.
Powell was transported to Regional Hospital, treated and cleared for jail submission.
Upon re-arrival at the jail, Powell was then taken to the medical jail staff for further assessment. He was cleared for further booking but put on sick call, which means he was scheduled to see another doctor Tuesday morning for even further assessment.
Between 2:15 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, jail staff responded to 10 other inmates, located in the same cell as Powell, trying to alert the staff of something wrong.
Upon arriving at the cell and seeing the unresponsive Powell, the staff immediately proceeded with the proper emergency health response. They alerted the paramedics and provided CPR and brought in a defibrillator to try to resuscitate him until the EMTs arrived.
Unfortunately, neither the paramedics nor the jail staff were able to revive Powell. A Vigo County Deputy Coroner pronounced Powell dead at the scene.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.
