3 Killed In Mount Vernon Fire

Last updated on Saturday, January 5, 2013

(MOUNT VERNON) - A woman, her young daughter and a teenage cousin were killed when fire swept through a house early Friday in a small southwestern Indiana city, authorities said.

All three were found dead after the fire broke out about 12:30 a.m., Mount Vernon Fire Chief Wes Dixon said. Five other people escaped the house, and two of them were taken to a hospital, Dixon told WFIE-TV and the Evansville Courier & Press.

The Posey County coroner identified those killed as 27-year-old Amanda Robb, her 5-year-old daughter, Aubrey Robb, and 15-year-old Bailey Robb.

Dixon said he didn't immediately know whether everyone inside the house was related.

Firefighters reported that flames were coming from the roof by the time they arrived at the two-story house in the 6,500-person Ohio River city about 20 miles west of Evansville.

Witness Larry Schakel said he saw firefighters bring two children who appeared to be fine from the back of the house as flames shot from the structure.

"The parents were hollering there were still kids in the house," Schakel told WFIE-TV. "One firefighter went through the front area of the house, busted through the glass and started shooting water through."

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known. The Courier & Press reported a state fire marshal's office investigator was at the scene.
