(INDIANAPOLIS) - A hefty pig was found eating cat food in a colony of feral cats on the city's east side, Indianapolis animal advocates said.

Tanya Spencer of reports that the pig is estimated to weigh nearly 300 pounds, has tusks, and is not neutered, Indianapolis Animal Care and Control officials said.

Officials did not say how the pig ended up in the feral cat colony, or if it has an owner.

IACC officials said the pig is up for adoption, but will need to be transported by a trailer because of its size.

Animal Care and Control officials said they've been picking up more and more pigs, and they want to remind all Marion County residents that owning a pet pig is against the law.

"People don't realize that there's an ordinance here in the city that does not allow you to own a pig unless you are zoned as a stock yard, slaughter house, or there's a very small percentage of the county that's zoned for livestock," said IACC's Adam Garrett. "So in those cases, if we do find somebody with a pig, if somebody calls us, we do have to go and confiscate that animal, because that's what the law requires."

Garrett said the law uses the word "swine," and does not differentiate among different types of pigs.

IACC has taken in everything from alligators and snakes to livestock, Garrett said. He cautions everyone to think hard before bringing home a cute baby anything.

"The bottom line here is, do your homework, realize it's a big commitment to have any kind of animal," Garrett said. "I think in this case somebody had it and just couldn't keep up with the amount of work involved. And realize what you can and can't have."

For anyone who finds themselves with an unwanted pet, there are rescue groups for everything -- from all different dog breeds, to pigs, horses and ferrets, and IACC will take any kind of animal if it can no longer be cared for.
