(TAYLORSVILLE) - Two people were sent to the hospital and Interstate 65 had traffic backups after a semitrailer's tire flew off Monday afternoon.

Indiana State Police and five other agencies responded to the incident near the 79-mile marker in Bartholomew County around 12:15 p.m.

Public Information Officer Noel Houze says the semi, a 2013 Peterbilt semi tractor pulling a trailer, was northbound on I-65 when the tire on the front drivers' side came off, causing the driver to lose control and go off the road, over a steep embankment and hit several trees and a fence.

Witnesses and other good Samaritans stopped and assisted the passenger of the semi, the driver, 53-year -Stevie Mack and his passenger, 34-year-old Lakisha Todd, both of Louisville, were able to free themselves from the wreckage and climb back up the hill.

Mack and Todd were both transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused one lane of I-65 northbound to be shut down and at the time of this release, the right lane remains closed as crews attempt to pull the wreckage back up the embankment so the vehicle can be towed from the scene.

Master Trooper Duncan was assisted by other troopers, Bartholomew County Sheriff's Deputies, German Township and Columbus Fire Departments, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Transportation, and 31 Wrecker Service.
