(SOUTH BEND) - A South Bend police officer has been suspended five days for disclosing information to the news media, an action police officials say violated department rules.
The city's Board of Public Safety voted Thursday to suspend Cpl. Jack Stilp, although it wasn't immediately determined when the suspension begins. WSBT-TV reports he's being suspended for leaking a complaint he made against Metro Homicide commander Tim Corbett to the media.
The department contended that Stilp violated department rules that limit media disclosures to the chief and public information officers. Stilp had previously said those rules apply only to criminal cases, not internal complaints. Stilp's attorney has argued the threat of a suspension violated Indiana's whistleblower laws.
The board ruled that whistleblower laws don't apply in this case and voted to suspend Stilp.
