More People Seeking Help With Heating Bills

Last updated on Sunday, December 9, 2012

(FRANKLIN) - Organizations that help people pay their heating bills during cold weather in central Indiana are running through their funds more quickly than expected due to a surge in need with four months left in winter.

Churches and nonprofit organizations in suburban Johnson County south of Indianapolis tell the Daily Journal they're getting requests for help from people who have never had to seek it before. Many have lost their jobs or aren't making as much money as they used to.

The Johnson County Human Services office has spent half its winter assistance budget with and it's still early in the heating season.

Most of the requests to the Saints Francis and Clare Catholic Church come from families whose utilities have either been disconnected or are about to be.
