Daniels' University Contract Set For Approval

Last updated on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue’s trustees are expected to approve Mitch Daniels’s contract to be the next university president this Saturday.

The trustees are scheduled to talk about specifics of the contract on Friday, the first day of the two-day board meeting, with a vote on the board's agenda for Saturday.

Daniels takes over at Purdue after he leaves the governor's office January 14th. He has asked for a largely performance-based contract ever since he was elected the school's next president by the trustees in June.

While he won't discuss numbers other than the length of the term - five years, Daniels says he thinks his contract will set a good example of fiscal responsibility to taxpayers and families whose money goes to Purdue, but will also show that the university is committed to the success of its students.

Trustees will deal with Daniels's contract during the same meeting in which the much larger contract of new Purdue football coach Darrell Hazell is discussed. Trustees are expected to give someone else the authority to finalize Hazell's deal, which is expected to pay the coach more than two million dollars a year.

Purdue's last president, Dr. France Cordova, made almost $476,000 dollars during the last year of her tenure. She resigned in July at the end of a five-year term.
