(SWITZERLAND COUNTY) - Today shortly after 4:30 p.m. a two vehicle crash claimed the life of a 71 year old woman from Frankfort Kentucky.

Pauline Sandifer was killed when she failed to yield and turned her 2010 Silver Hyundai from Bennett Road into the path of a west bound car on State Road 156.

The west bound Toyota, driven by Emily Harsin, age 20 from Vevay, struck the Hyundai in the side. Sandifer was pronounced dead at the scene. Harsin was transported to Kings Daughter Hospital in Madison with non-life threatening injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department, Vevay Police Department and Switzerland County Fire, Rescue and EMS.

According to the Indiana fatal crash statistics, the leading causes of fatal crashes are running off the road on the right, followed by failure to yield (or disregarding a signal or sign,) then unsafe speed. The Indiana State Police remain committed to reducing crashes, educating the public on the main causes of crashes and patrolling in high crash areas.
