Teacher's Legacy To Live On Through Award

Last updated on Thursday, November 22, 2012

(GREENWOOD) - Those who knew and loved Jennifer Longworth want to turn her tragic death into something positive for some of her former students.

The PTO at Southwest Elementary School has created an award in honor of the teacher, who along with her husband was killed in the Indianapolis explosion.

The Southwest Elementary Jennifer and Dion Longworth Memorial Award will be given to a graduating Greenwood High School student every year, and Southwest principal Beth Guilfoy says they hope to give the award to one of Longworth's former students for the first few years of it's existence.

Longworth's father, Don Buxton, says the award will help carry on the legacy of love for children that Longworth and her husband, Dion, had. Buxton says she had a passion for teaching people ever since she was a girl, when he says she used to pretend to teach her younger brothers while they grew up in the Center Grove area.

The award will be in the amount of $1000, and while Guilfoy says they will look for donations to fund the award in the future, the first year's award will be paid for by Indianapolis Colts' owner Jim Irsay, fitting she says because Longworth was a passionate Colts Fan.

You can make a donation to the award by sending a check to the Johnson County Community Foundation Longworth Fund., P.O. Box 217, Franklin, IN 46131.
