Police: Children slept through standoff

Last updated on Sunday, November 11, 2012

(FORT WAYNE) - Police say two young children slept through a nearly three-hour standoff with a man who injured their mother during a fight inside the family’s Fort Wayne apartment.

Officers surrounded the apartment after the woman fled the apartment before 3:30 a.m. Saturday and called police, leaving the 4-year-old and 1-year-old children inside.

The Journal Gazette and WANE-TV report officers weren't able to contact the 23-year-old man and forced their way inside the apartment after 6 a.m. Police say he had a handgun and two loaded magazines of ammunition but was arrested without incident.

Police say the children were found asleep and uninjured in another room and were returned to their mother, who had minor injuries.
